Facts and Opinions on the Dangers of Texting While Driving

Four states are actively attempting to ban driving while texting (DWT), with Washington passing a ban early this year on all drivers sending electronic messages while on the road. In 17 states including the District of Columbia, young or inexperienced drivers are banned from using cell phones, even using a hands-free kit.

It was just over winter break that I was surprised to see one of my best high school friends driving while texting, I couldn’t believe he was taking his eyes off the road to text some people he knew. He said it wasn’t important, “just some girl”. The roads were slick and the Tulee fog was out in Lodi, California. After a minute he received a reply text and pulled off to write back again, and we took a skid off one of the turns and slid off into the tract off the road, causing $300 of body damage and two tires. Here are some key  points about the prevalence of the issue in bullet form.

o By Bret Schulte - An estimated 20 percent of drivers are sending or receiving text messages while behind the wheel, according to a Nationwide Insurance study. And, according to another poll, that number skyrockets to 66 percent when drivers 18 to 24 are isolated. The practice, especially popular among young people, is exacting a deadly toll.

In various accredited published studies, some 46 percent of drivers ages 16 to 17 admit to texting while driving.  Safety – Something about driving, seems to require a lot of attention to detail, details like how fast I am going, is there a car in my blind spot.

Cell phone use in vehicles and the larger issue of distracted (CBS News4-20-08).  Legality in California: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a law making it illegal to read or send text messages while driving in California.

The bill imposes a 20 dollar fine for a first offense and 50 dollars for repeat offenders using any electronic devices to read or send messages, (CBS News)

o What could be so important that you could ignore your first responsibility of driving

o Not an issue of freedom, because texting should be banned to protect the safety and freedom of everyone else on the road
